CCE Erie County’s Salad without Soil Workshop Connects Local Veterans to Career Opportunities in Agriculture and Farming

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County (CCE) and Community Action Organization of Erie County, INC. (CAO) to work with local Veterans to learn about, design, and build a hydroponics system.

Buffalo, NY. Operation: Ag, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County’s veteran and military family support task force, is pleased to announce the date of their first workshop, Salad without Soil, which will be held on August 5th at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Action Organization’s Green Entrepreneurial Center, 70 Harvard Place, Buffalo, NY 14209.

CCE Farm Business Management Educator, Megan Burley, and CAO Horticulturist, Mike Lee invite Veterans to attend Salad without Soil where they will learn about, design and build a hydroponic growing system for salad greens. The program objective is to start a discussion between Erie County’s military community and local agricultural experts, while increasing awareness of agricultural career opportunities through a hands-on activity.

Erie County is home to over 62,000 Veterans as of 2013.[1] With connections to over 60 farms and multiple agricultural organizations and businesses, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County is committed to helping these Veterans find educational and career opportunities. CCE’s Operation: Ag intends to listen to the needs of the veteran community in order to determine how to better support those who would like to pursue careers in agriculture or farming while giving them an outlet and support system in which to discuss their experiences. Potential career paths include but are not limited to; building and construction, forestry, urban farming, food packaging, agronomy, bioengineering, lobbying, agribusiness management, and aquaponics.
