HCSI takes a new approach to improving access to fresh, affordable produce and healthier options in neighborhood corner stores. The goal of HCSI is to incentivize and educate both store owners and the community to shift their perceptions of what "healthy" means. For store owners, we aim to raise awareness about the health implications of the products they sell and encourage them to stock healthier options. For residents, we want to inform them about the benefits of healthy eating and highlight the local stores where they can find healthier choices. Currently funded by the Buffalo Bills Foundation and the American College of Cardiology, HCSI has 16 participating stores and several community support sites. The Healthy Community Store Initiative, along with its Program Manager and Educator, is part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County (CCE Erie).
