Good to Great-Improving Labor Management

  • Wednesday, February 28, 2018, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

On a farm, your employees are your most valuable resource. Did you know that wages, salaries, and contract labor expenses represent more than 40 percent of the cost of production in labor-intensive crops like fruits, vegetables, and nursery products? Investing in your labor management skills is a direct investment in your business.

If you want to become a more effective manager, join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County (CCE Erie) for a farm business human relations workshop on February 28th, 2018, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm at the Roycroft Print Shop, Dard Hunter Hall (2nd floor). The cost to attend is $40 for those enrolled in Cornell Cooperative Extension and $50 for those not enrolled in the CCE Erie Agriculture Program. Lunch, snacks, and materials will be provided. Attendees will practice several labor management techniques including writing job descriptions and developing employee evaluations. Other topics covered will include retaining good staff when money is tight, managing conflict, and worker safety.

With funding from New York State, the Cornell Small Farms Program is able to provide scholarships for New York State veterans to attend this program. To learn more about this opportunity and to determine if you are eligible for a scholarship, please contact Kat McCarthy at kmm485@cornell.edu.
